a) OHCC Conference
Ontario Healthy Communities Coalition, in partnership with Community Quality Improvement, Algoma University College and Garden River First Nation, will be hosting a two-day conference on May 29-30, 2008 in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario.
"Community Quality of Life: From Indicators to Action" will bring together private, public and nonprofit sector leaders in the common challenge of improving human well being within their respective communities.The main focus of the conference will be on indicator initiatives, which are being developed by many communities across Canada to address a range of community issues.It will also provide an impetus for moving indicator initiatives from data collection to a catalyst for community change.
Four key note addresses and sixteen workshops will be presented during the conference, focussing on four theme areas:
1. Using indicators to improve community quality of life
2. Public health and the built environment
3. Quality of life challenges and opportunities among First Nations peoples
4. Innovative approaches to improving community quality of life

b) OHCC Webinars
The following webinars have been scheduled for March 2008. There is no charge for these courses but pre-registration is required. Creating Inclusive Community Organizations

Health Promotion 101

The Ontario Health Promotion Resource System (OHPRS) developed this stand alone on-line course to help health promoters in Ontario become familiar with essential health promotion concepts. Health promoters include those who work to promote health, regardless of professional designation or whether they are paid or volunteers. Those who have worked through Health Promotion 101 are welcome to pose questions about the material and discuss its application to their work.
The session will be facilitated by Robb MacDonald.
Community Development Strategies for Health Promoters

In this webinar health promoters will learn about the basic values and concepts of community development. A variety of strategies that can help health promoters to work effectively with communities and engage community residents in promoting the conditions that further health promotion will be discussed. a) The University of Guelph Ontario Agriculture College Award 2008
This recognition program was established in 1997 to honour those who have contributed their time, effort and expertise for the betterment of Ontario's agri-food, rural and environmental sectors. All individuals employed outside of government or the University of Guelph are eligible. OAC offers three different awards: the Outstanding Service Award, the Volunteer Recognition Award (Agrifood/Rural/Environment) and the OAC Cooperator-Partner Award. Recipients will be selected based on the impact of their contributions. Awards will be presented at the OAC Recognition Banquet to be held April 23rd , 2008.

All contributions are most welcome, and will help ensure that we can continue to host this showcase event. Supporters at the $150 level or above will be recognized in communications related to the event and receive complimentary tickets. Charitable tax receipts will be issued for all donations.

b) Community-based projects in Kingston receive $190,000 in Healthy Community Fund
Twenty-four community based groups in Kingston have been awarded a share in $190 000 of the Kingston Healthy Community Fund, which was voluntarily administered by United Way. The Healthy Community Fund was created to support the city's Strategic Plan which fosters projects focusing specifically on youth, seniors, volunteers, neighbourhoods and culture within the Kingston, Frontenac, Lennox and Addington Falls area. The objectives of the fund are to:
Provide organizations and groups within the City of Kingston the financial resources to support projects to strengthen our community.
- Encourage formal and informal partnerships among community sectors.
- Encourage efficient/effective methods of delivering programs.
- Foster innovation and creativity in addressing the needs of the community.

c) New $50,000 Fellowship to Promote Civil Society and Voluntary Action
The Carold Institute has initiated the new Alan Thomas Fellowship to support professional development in the NGO/nonprofit sector.The fellowship is designed to promote the importance of voluntary action within the community and to strengthen ties among civil society leaders and social movements. The fellowship is valued at $50,000 for one year and will be awarded to a leader in the NGO/nonprofit sector who would not normally have access to a sabbatical leave.The objective of the fellowship is to facilitate a significant contribution to the sector through research and possible publication. The Carold Institute invites projects that promote civil society and voluntary action to apply.
Deadline for applications is February 29, 2008.

a) Exploring Food Security with Young Aboriginal Moms

CUHI 2006 Seed Grant Recipient

The seminar will present findings from a research project conducted with young Aboriginal mothers in Toronto using Aboriginal research methodologies. The project explores issues affecting food security for these mothers and their children with a focus on community involvement and policy connections.
Dr. Cyndy Baskin, of the Mi'kmaq Nation, is an Associate Professor in the School of Social Work and the Centre for Studies in Food Security at Ryerson University. Cyndy's teaching, research and writing focus on Aboriginal world views, research methodologies, decolonization, and the strength, resilience and resistance of Indigenous peoples globally.
b) "Getting Started with Self-Help Groups", a FREE 2-hour Distance Education Workshop

The Ontario Self-Help Network (OSHNET) is offering another distance education workshop. Participants will simultaneously log-on their computers and talk on the phone to participate in this unique interactive learning opportunity. OSHNET designed this new introductory level workshop for Ontario residents (from all walks of life) who are interested or involved in starting a self-help support group. From the convenience of your home or office, participants will learn: What is a self-help/peer support group? 10 steps to start a group in your community; Key tips for keeping your group on track.

The Provincial Consortium on Youth Recreation is please to offer two full day workshops designed for those who manage, supervise and/or coordinate programs for youth (age 13 and up) in a recreation setting. d) Architecture For Humanity - Building Sustainability Lecture Series

Subject: The Built Environement and its Impact on Health
With Toronto as the terrain, this event called "Manufacturing Neighbourhoods", will explore the larger issues of integrating the elements involved in building sustainable social frameworks. Discussions will explore the fundamental building blocks of community design, civic participation and environmental responsibility, as social determinants of health, and the challenges associated with bringing these sometimes contradictory elements together into a vibrant and healthy, cohesive,neighbourhood. A carefully crafted list of panelists is being planned in collaboration with the Ontario Healthy Communities Coalition, who is co-sponsoring the evening as part of their Healthy Communities and the Built Environment (HCBE) project. This lecture is a part of a series of lectures in 2007-2008 put on by Architecture For Humanity (Toronto) who are working to help build sustainable and socially equitable living and working environments.

g) Semaine nationale de la francophonie

La 16e Semaine nationale de la francophonie aura lieu du 7 au 23 mars 2008, dans le cadre des Rendez-vous de la Francophonie. le thème de la semaine sera" D'hier à demain, la francophonie m'appartient .".Ce thème fait référence à l'héritage francophone qui s'est transmis depuis plusieurs générations ainsi qu'au sentiment d'appartenance de chaque individu à la grande communauté francophone canadienne. Les jeunes seront sensibilisés à l'histoire de la francophonie depuis les quatre derniers siècles et ils seront amenés à faire part de leurs expériences et de leurs connaissances. The TTS research project is a partnership between the Gendering Adolescent AIDS Prevention Project (University of Toronto), Planned Parenthood Toronto, York University's Faculty of Environmental Studies, the University of Toronto's Public Health Sciences Department, the Ontario HIV/AIDS Treatment Network (OHTN), and Toronto Public Health.
The aim of the seminar is to gather information from youth on assets, gaps and barriers that currently exist in sexual health education and services and to use the information to develop a citywide strategy to increase positive sexual health outcomes for diverse Toronto youth.
