1. INSIDE OHCC

a) New OHCC Workshop "Building Healthy Communities"

Based on findings of our collaborative project, "Healthy Communities and the Built Environment", we are pleased to announce the "Building Healthy Communities" workshop. The "built" environment "encompasses all buildings, spaces, and products that are created or modified by people. It includes our homes, schools, workplaces, parks/recreation areas, business areas and roads." (Health Canada) How we plan our communities has a strong impact on our air, soil and water quality, safety, physical activity, stress and social capital, all of which affect our health.

This workshop provides an overview of the concepts involved in planning built environments and an opportunity for participants to share their experiences and generate ideas for action, which may range from small, practical steps to longer-range strategic processes directed at planning policy.

If you are interested in this workshop, please fill out a workshop request form and send it to Jadie McDonnell, Communications Coordinator.

b) Ontario Medical Review - Why Poverty Makes Us Sick

This resource, by the Ontario Physicians Poverty Work Group, looks at the link between poverty and health, as well as the social determinants of health, from a physician's approach."Physicians can make a difference for their individual patients by integrating a "determinants of health" approach into patient care. But individual physicians and the health system alone cannot address most of the upstream causes of poor health. Therefore, physicians must work with others to advance public policy that addresses these determinants, such as poverty."
