The Publication
The publication provides a summary of the 2008 Healthy Communities and the Built Environment project and includes learnings and conclusions from the project. Additional information is conveyed through a collection of modules, with each module relating to a particular aspect of how the built environment impacts health  Case studies are used throughout to illustrate points made in the various modules. Regardless of our sector or profession, we all have a role to play. Key strategies for building healthier communities are outlined and a listing of tools and resources is provided.

The agenda

The program will begin with a brief talk by Lorna Heidenheim, Executive Director of the Ontario Healthy Communities Coalition, on the origins of the Healthy Communities and the Built Environment project, as well as the objectives and outcomes of this collaborative initiative. Three of the authors of articles in the publication will be featured and will discuss their work and activities. With the completion of all presentations, there will be an opportunity for a question and answer session and panel discussion. The meeting will adjourn promptly at noon.

La publication

La publication, qui comprend un sommaire du projet intitulé 2008 Healthy Communities and the Built Environment, présente les leçons et les conclusions tirées du projet. Des renseignements supplémentaires sont fournis au moyen d’une série de modules, chacun décrivant un aspect particulier de l’incidence de l’environnement bâti sur la santé et évoquant un message positif pour expliquer en quoi il est possible de créer des communautés qui favorisent promotion de la santé. Tout au long du document, des études de cas illustrent des points émis dans les divers modules, entre autres, que nous avons tous un rôle à jouer, quel que soit notre profession ou le secteur que nous représentons. Dans la publication, sont également proposées des stratégies clés pour créer des communautés en santé ainsi que des listes d’outils et de ressources.

L’ordre du jour

Lorna Heidenheim, directrice générale de la Coalition des communautés en santé de l’Ontario, ouvrira la séance par une brève allocution sur le fondement du projet Healthy Communities and the Built Environment ainsi que sur les objectifs et les résultats de cette initiative de collaborative. Parmi les auteurs des articles inclus dans le document, trois assisteront comme conférenciers et discuteront de leurs travaux et de leurs activités. À la fin des présentations, les participants auront l’occasion de contribuer dans le cadre d’une séance de questions et réponses et d’un groupe de discussion. La séance sera levée à midi exactement.

b) Stratégies gagnantes pour rédiger une proposition efficace

Le Webinair aidera le rédacteur débutant et chevronné à rédiger une proposition réussie, suivant un cadre d’élaboration d’une proposition à six étapes mis au point par la Coalition des communautés en santé de l’Ontario (CCSO) et The Health Communication Unit (THCU). Par le biais d’exemples concrets, vous serez outiller à rédiger une proposition convaincante qui reflète les attentes des bailleurs de fonds et le mécanisme de financement actuel.  Les participants seront invités à partager leurs expériences et leurs expertises sur ce sujet.

c) Become a Healthy Communities Champion!

OHCC is looking for individuals interested in educating Ontarians about Healthy Communities and OHCC. Through our Healthy Communities Champion Program, volunteers will represent OHCC by:

  • attending networking events
  • distributing OHCC materials 
  • giving brief presentations on Healthy Communities and OHCC
  • meeting with representatives of other organizations whose mission and values are aligned with OHCC and provide them with information on OHCC and the services we offer 

All participants will receive an in depth orientation to Healthy Communities, will be exempt from fees for many OHCC workshops and events and will be recognized on OHCC website, at our Annual General Meeting and in our Annual Report.

Devenir un champion des communautés en santé

La CCSO cherche des individus qui s'interesse à éduquer les Ontariens sur les Communautés en santé et sur la CCSO. Les champions de communautés en santé peuvent aider la CCSO à atteindre les objectifs suivants :

  • Assister aux activités de réseautage du réseau au nom de la CCSO
  • Distribuer des brochures et d’autres produits de la CCSO
  • Donner de courtes présentations sur les Communautés en santé et la CCSO, s’il y a lieu
  • Transmettre des renseignements sur la CCSO à d’autres personnes qui pourraient être intéressées
  • Rencontrer des représentants d’autres organisations dont la mission et les valeurs correspondent à celles de la CCSO afin de les informer sur les services qu’offre la CCSO

Les participants recevront une orientation approfondie sur les Communautés en santé et la CCSO,  participeront à des événements de réseautage qui peuvent être bénéfiques pour soi et pour son organisation seront exempté de payer les frais d’inscription à de nombreux événements et ateliers offerts par la CCSO et seront reconnu à l’Assemblée générale annuelle, dans le Rapport annuel et sur le site Web de la CCSO.

a) Canada Gets Active/ Canada Actif!

Interested in being one of 5 communities in Canada to provide Grade 5 students with a FREE Community Physical Activity Pass that will provide FREE access to recreation and facilities? Learn more about the Canadian Parks and Recreation Association’s (CPRA’s) Canada Gets Active Pilot Project that will be taking place in 2009/2010! CPRA is working on a new project titled Canada Gets Active.

Modeled after Kingston Gets Active (KGA), and in conjunction with the Everybody gets to play™ initiative, the main objective of Canada Gets Active is to increase Physical Activity involvement of Canadian children by increasing their access to and participation in community recreation facilities.

In the next few weeks CPRA will be sending out the official Call for Applications for communities who would like to apply to pilot this project. For those communities who want to confirm their interest and receive additional information please contact Carolyn McClelland at cmcclelland@cpra.ca or call 613-523-5315 x312.

Canada Actif!

Un nouveau projet est en cours d’élaboration : Canada Gets Active (Canada actif)! Souhaitez-vous faire partie des 5 collectivités du Canada qui remettront une carte d’accès GRATUITE à leurs activités et installations récréatives aux élèves de 5e année?

Renseignez-vous sur le projet pilote Canada Gets Active (Canada actif) que l’Association canadienne des parcs et loisirs (l’ACPL) mettra en oeuvre en 2009-2010! L’ACPL met au point un nouveau projet intitulé Canada Gets Active (Canada actif). Il s’inspire du modèle de Kingston Gets Active (KGA) et de l’initiative Jeux sans frontièresMD : son principal objectif consiste à augmenter la participation des enfants canadiens à l’activité physique en améliorant leur accès aux installations récréatives communautaires et aux activités qui y sont organisées. Ne laissez surtout pas passer cette occasion!

Au cours des prochaines semaines, l’ACPL enverra un appel à candidature officiel aux collectivités qui souhaiteront présenter leur candidature pour participer à ce projet pilote. Les collectivités qui souhaitent confirmer leur intérêt et obtenir de plus amples renseignements sont priées de prendre contact avec Carolyn McClelland en lui adressant un courriel à cmcclelland@cpra.ca ou en l’appelant au 613-523-5315, poste 312.

a) Clean Air Partnership and GTA Clean Air Council Smog Summit (Toronto)
Wednesday, June 3, 2009

The 10th annual Smog Summit will be held on the morning of June 3rd, 2009 in Toronto City Hall’s Council Chambers. Annual Smog Summits and the ongoing work of the GTA Clean Air Council has helped to raise awareness of air pollution and climate change and the urgent need for solutions in the Greater Toronto Area. 

Each year, the GTA Clean Air Council makes progress on research, capacity building and the implementation of clean air and climate change actions. The 10th annual Smog Summit invites you to:

  • Hear about the clean air and climate change actions being undertaken by GTA-CAC jurisdictions;
  • Hear a keynote presentation from Storm Cunningham, author of ReWealth – Stake Your Claim to the $2 Trillion Development Trend that’s Renewing the World and CEO of Resolution Fund, LLC in Washington, DC. Resolution Fund helps communities, counties, tribes, regions, and nations ignite rapid, resilient renewal of their economy, their natural resources, and their quality of life; and a keynote from Peter Victor, author of Managing Without Growth-Slower by Design, not Disaster; and
  • Receive an update on 2008 Inter-governmental Declaration on Clean Air action items and learn more about the 2009 Inter-governmental Declaration on Clean Air action items and targets.


A Best Practices Exchange will follow the 2009 Smog Summit; the theme will be ReDevelopment – the enhancement of a populace’s quality of life via economic growth that’s based primarily on the renewal of a region’s natural, built and socioeconomic assets. Presentations will highlight actions being undertaken across the GTA and region to reduce the ecological footprint of new developments in order to reduce air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions and create more competitive and liveable communities.

b) AOHC Annual Conference - Poverty and Health (Toronto)

d) First Nation Perspectives on Child Development Workshop- Best Start Resource Centre (Sudbury and Sault Ste Marie)

This workshop is for service providers who work with First Nation families that have young children (e.g., early childhood educators, public health and community health nurses, social service workers, family physicians, health promoters, etc.).

Workshop Description:

This session will provide an overview of First Nation perspectives on child development. It will share information about developmental targets and how parents support reaching these targets. The session will help service providers to develop their skills for working with First Nation families that have young children and to understand Aboriginal perspectives on nurturing the development of children.
 
Speaker: Jaynane Burning-Fields
Jaynane Burning-Fields is Aboriginal from Six Nations Reserve and was raised in the traditional culture. She has spent 16 years working at the provincial level as a manager of the Aboriginal Children's programmes that service the urban Aboriginal population. Jaynane's knowledge and skill set have been developed through this work and have been strengthened by her knowledge of traditional values and principles. Jaynane has had the opportunity to use her skills and knowledge about culture based programming in various capacities, including working with Statistics Canada on the development of the Aboriginal Children's Survey, the Ministry of Children and Youth's Panel of Experts (Early Learning Framework), and the Foundation of International Training - Egypt. Jaynane is currently the Executive Director of the Niagara Regional Native Centre.

Ontario Health Promotion Summer School 2009 – the 16th presentation of this remarkable educational event – is offered by the Centre for Health Promotion at the University of Toronto.

The theme of this year’s Summer School is eHealth Promotion: Connecting Communities and Resources in the 21st Century, and presenters bringing cutting edge analysis will share their knowledge, case studies, original models and innovative practices related to this important arena.

Additional option: Participants at HPSS 2009 can choose among different series: First Peoples’ (Series 1), Francophone (Series 2) or General (Series 3). Each series is planned by community-based committees and offers a stimulating, unique and practical curriculum.

i) OPHA 2009 Annual Conference ( Toronto)

4. RESOURCES

a) World Health Organization has launched a new online course on the social determinants of health

The course consists of an online tutorial with four learning units that making connections between health, and equity, social justice and human rights. It is intended to provide insight on the social determinants of health in order to encourage changes in policy that promote and protect the health of a population. The course is available in English, Spanish and Portuguese, and is targeted to WHO staff members and other health ministry officials but is free to access and fully available to the public.
