to assist staff and board members of not-for-profit enhance their
skills and build capacity
within their organizations. The webinars will be offered for a limited

c) Become a Healthy Communities Champion!
OHCC
is looking for individuals interested in educating Ontarians about
Healthy Communities and OHCC. Through our Healthy Communities Champion
Program, volunteers will represent OHCC by:
- attending networking events
- distributing OHCC materials
- giving brief presentations on Healthy Communities and OHCC
- meeting with representatives of other organizations whose mission and values are aligned with OHCC and provide them with information on OHCC and the services we offer
All participants will receive an in depth orientation to Healthy Communities, will be exempt from fees for many OHCC workshops and events and will be recognized on OHCC website, at our Annual General Meeting and in our Annual Report.

La CCSO
cherche des individus qui s'interesse à éduquer les Ontariens sur les
Communautés en santé et sur la CCSO. Les champions de communautés en
santé peuvent aider la CCSO à atteindre les objectifs suivants :
- Assister aux activités de réseautage du réseau au nom de la CCSO
- Distribuer des brochures et d’autres produits de la CCSO
- Donner de courtes présentations sur les Communautés en santé et la CCSO, s’il y a lieu
- Transmettre des renseignements sur la CCSO à d’autres personnes qui pourraient être intéressées
- Rencontrer des représentants d’autres organisations dont la mission et les valeurs correspondent à celles de la CCSO afin de les informer sur les services qu’offre la CCSO
Les participants recevront une orientation approfondie sur les Communautés en santé et la CCSO, participeront à des événements de réseautage qui peuvent être bénéfiques pour soi et pour son organisation seront exempté de payer les frais d’inscription à de nombreux événements et ateliers offerts par la CCSO et seront reconnu à l’Assemblée générale annuelle, dans le Rapport annuel et sur le site Web de la CCSO.

2. NEWS
a) Ontario's New Toxic Reduction Act 2009 - Consultations
Ontario is moving forward with the development and implementation of the Toxics Reduction Strategy that is intended to help prevent pollution and protect the environment by reducing the use and creation of toxic substances.
On September 18, 2009, a draft regulation proposed to be made under Ontario’s new Toxics Reduction Act, 2009 (Act) was posted on the Environmental Registry until October 19, 2009. The regulation sets out the proposed requirements that facilities would meet in order to comply with the Act. During this period of consultation, four full-day multi-stakeholder consultation sessions will be held across the province to present and receive comments on the draft regulation.

b) Spark Community Advocacy Fund
Spark Together for Healthy Kids™ is the Heart and Stroke Foundation’s response to the growing epidemic of childhood obesity.
Applications are now being accepted for the November 1st deadline for the Foundation’s Spark Community Advocacy Fund.
The Spark Community Advocacy Fund is a grants competition that helps groups begin to spark action on this issue in their communities. It provides financial support for advocacy initiatives that focus on increasing access to physical activity and/or healthy food for children across the province.
Interested applicants are encouraged to view the Community Advocacy Fund Webcast at www.heartandstroke.ca/spark, and to download and review the Q & A and the Grant Guidelines prior to submitting an application.
The deadline for applications is November 1st.

Together with you, the City of Toronto is committed to reducing Toronto's greenhouse gas emissions by 80% by 2050.
You can help, too, by retiring your old two-stroke gas mower, trimmer, leaf blower or chainsaw. Just bring your equipment to a Community Environment Day and the City will take it off your hands, free of charge, for responsible dismantling and recycling.

b) Get Growing - Community Gardens for 2010 (London)
Tuesday, October 6th 2009
Community leaders across Ontario are invited to attend the upcoming Get Growing - Community Gardens for 2010 workshop.
The session is for those interested in learning how to start successful community gardens and will provide some hands on practical tips and information that can be put into practice right away. The workshop will help plan a community gardens project or strengthen an already existing community gardens project.
Topics
covered in this workshop include:
• Getting started with community gardens (land, funds, resources, publicity,
etc)
• Policy and procedures
• Continued support for gardeners
In addition, the workshop will include hands-on case studies and a tour of the White Oaks Garden, part of the London Community Resource Centre’s existing community garden network.
The workshop is organized by the Local Food Action Group, comprised of members of planning committees of two previous London events organized by FoodNet Ontario and the London Community Resource Centre:

e) Canadian Community for Dialogue and Deliberation Conference (Toronto)

a) Healthy Futures for BC Families- Policy Recommendations for Improving the Health of British Columbians
The BC Healthy Living Alliance released the report "Healthy Futures for BC Families - Policy Recommendations for Improving the Health of British Columbians". The Report contains 45 recommendations covering such areas as early childhood development, housing, food security, income security, transportation and supportive environments.

b) Core Competencies for Public Health In Canada Orientation Module
Public health core competencies are the essential knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary for the broad practice of public health. In an effort to increase understanding and build support for the integration of Core Competencies for Public Health in Canada: Release 1.0, the Ontario Public Health Association, in partnership with the Public Health Agency of Canada, has developed an Orientation Module for public health professionals.
The Core Competencies for Public Health in Canada Orientation Module is designed to get public health professionals talking about the 36 core competencies for public health, their importance in guiding public health practice, and how they can help build public health capacity.
This “one stop shop” Orientation Module offers information, tools, and resources to help you become familiar with the Core Competencies for Public Health in Canada: Release 1.0. It provides ways in which the Core Competencies can be used and integrated in your job, with your team, and across your organization!
