Traditional Territory Acknowledgements in Ontario Traditional Territory Acknowledgements in Ontario

OTF Aboriginal Circle Committee Logos

The Aboriginal Circle of the Ontario Federation of Labour created a guide to  regional territorial acknowledgements. Ontario is covered by 46 treaties and other agreements, such as land purchases by the Crown signed between 1781 and 1930.

Treaties are the legally binding agreements that set out the rights, responsibilities and relationships of First Nations and the federal and provincial governments. The goal of this guide is to encourage the acknowledgement of the First Peoples on whose traditional territories we live and work. This acknowledgement appropriately takes place at the commencement of courses, meetings or conferences, and presentations.
