b) OHCC Community Quality of Life Conference: From Indicators to Action

Some funds have been set aside to provide subsidies, on a first come first served basis, to members who would otherwise be unable to attend. Ontario Healthy Communities Coalition, Community Quality Improvement, Algoma University College and Garden River First Nation have been working together as partners to organize this exciting two-day conference in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario.
"Community Quality of Life: From Indicators to Action" will bring together private, public and not-for-profit sector leaders in the common challenge of improving human well being within their respective communities.
The main focus of the conference will be on indicator initiatives, which are being developed by many communities across Canada to address a range of community issues. It will provide opportunities for sharing information about approaches to measuring community quality of life and ways of making indicator initiatives more effective, systematic and relevant. It will also provide an impetus for moving indicator initiatives from data collection to becoming catalysts for community change.
Five key note addresses will be given by acclaimed leaders and renowned experts on various aspects of community quality of life. Sixteen workshops will be provided by practitioners, researchers and academics from a diverse range of programs and initiatives, organized into four themes:
1. Using indicators to improve community quality of life
2. Building healthy environments
3. Quality of life challenges and opportunities among First Nations peoples
4. Innovative approaches to improving community quality of life

2. NEWS
a) Child Poverty Action Network featured in the Minden Times
Renfrew County's Child and Poverty Action Network (CPAN), an OHCC member, was recently featured in the Minden Times article "County's Poverty Problem No Easy Fix" as part of a series on poverty in the Highlands. The article highlighted the success of the CPAN backpack program, snowsuit program and the poverty reduction training program. The article also highlighted several other poverty reduction initiatives across Ontario, including the city of Peterborough, Kawartha Lakes and Haliburton area.
OHCC's central region community animator was also featured in the series on poverty, in the article "Affordable Housing Hard to Find", which addressed the difficulty for low-income families to find housing within the Haliburton. The OHCC animator discusses the importance of housing as a social determinant of health.

b) Best Start Resource Centre Consultation Request Information
The Best Start Resource Centre provides information and consultations in English and French on a wide range of topics to service providers across Ontario who work with expectant parents and young families. Topics range from health before pregnancy, pregnancy (examples: substance use during pregnancy, men's reproductive health, teen pregnancy/parenting, advanced maternal age etc.), maternal health (examples: post-partum depression, breastfeeding, etc.) and issues related to child health (examples: environmental health, shaken baby syndrome, physical activity and the early years, etc.).
For immediate support, consultants provide services free of charge by phone or email to problem-solve, discuss strategies and approaches, review action plans or funding proposals, link you to resources or comment on draft resources. To access these services, please contact one of our consultants:

On-site consultations, in your community, are intensive, in-depth sessions that can help you work on a specific issue. Content and timing are tailored to meet your needs. Basic consultations serve to increase knowledge about current research and implications and help you consider and select effective strategies. Advanced consultations are designed to assist you in developing plans, designing initiatives, building partnerships, problem solving, etc. The Resource Centre covers some associated costs. These on-site consultations need to be booked in advance.
To request an on-site consultation, email one of our consultants. Please be sure to include the following:

* Topic/issue
* Language of Consultation (French, English)
* What you hope the consultation will accomplish

c) Evergreen Common Grounds Applications for Grant Programs Supporting Community Environmental Restoration Projects
The Home Depot-Evergreen Rebuilding Nature Grant 2008 provides grants of $1,000, $3,000 or $8,000 - plus $2,000 in Home Depot gift cards - to cover the costs of tools and building, native plants and trees, and other expenses associated with urban environmental stewardship projects in Canada.

The application deadline is Friday, June 6th 2008.
The Unilever-Evergreen Aquatic Stewardship and Conservation Grant Program 2008 provides grants of between $3,500 and $10,000 to support small-scale, community-driven, education and restoration projects that increase public awareness of sustainable water use and the importance of aquatic features, while providing meaningful opportunities for community action.

This event will address "The role of food and agriculture in the design and planning of buildings and cities" Symposium being hosted by the School of Architecture at Ryerson University.
This session will feature the following two speakers with Joe Nasr acting as moderator.
Jerome Kaufman: Food in Planning: A Seven Year Odyssey From Off The Table To On The Table
Among life's basic necessities (air, water, food, and shelter) only food was absent from the table of interests which planning practitioners and planning scholars pursued at the beginning of the 21st century. Some explanations for this lack of attention will be offered and events that gradually pushed food issues onto the planner's table since then will be considered.
André Viljoen: Designing for urban agriculture: examples and issues
This presentation will present a European perspective on designing for Urban Agriculture. Contemporary European approaches to designing cities and buildings for urban agriculture will be presented and the concept of the Continuous Productive Urban Landscapes will be introduced.

Jane's Walk is a coordinated series of free neighbourhood walking tours given by locals who care passionately about where they live, work and play. The catalogue consists of extensive in-house multi-media resources library, which may be borrowed by members, as well as our eResources, which are available for download.
b) The Last Straw! - Award winning board game on the Social Determinants of Health
The Last Straw! is an engaging way to learn about the social issues that affect health.It takes players on a journey through the life cycle where they will encounter "macro" issues such as political climate, economic structure and environmental change, and "micro" issues, such as individual finances, education, and family dynamics. Players also learn how these "macro" and "mirco" issues are linked: the health of both individuals and the whole community are at stake.
