With climate change becoming a serious concern, people have been more aware of their carbon footprint. Individuals have come to understand the effect of GHG emissions on the environment.

One of the contributors to GHG emissions is food production, mainly in meat and dairy products. A sustainable diet will help in protecting the environment and help society achieve food security.

Food choices play an important role in climate change too. Consumption of some marine species should be minimized to ensure their ecosystem is healthy. There are many organizations that agree with choosing a healthy diet that has a low negative impact on the environment.

In general, a sustainable diet should have:

  • A wide variety
  • A balanced food intake with regards to needs
  • Plenty of vegetables, whole grains, tubers, and fruits
  • Plant-based protein or smaller amounts of meat
  • Moderate amounts of dairy, nuts, and seeds
  • A balanced Omega 3:6 ratio

While opting for these foods lower GHG emissions, switching only to diets that have the lowest emissions is not recommended. The goal here is to choose diets that are nutritious but also lower in emissions compared to other non-nutritious food that can create higher emissions.
